Our beautiful,
decorative Polish Wood Keepsake Boxes are
handcrafted of
Linden Wood in the Tatra Mountains of
Poland, using traditional, centuries-old techniques.
The making of decorated wood keepsake boxes has deep historical roots in southern Poland. Farmers and shepherds settled the Tatra region of the Carpathian mountains, a region called
Podhale, toward the end of the first millennium AD. During the long winter months, as their fields lay under cover of snow, farmers spent their free time working wood. Every member of the family participated in
the decorative craft.
The decorating process begins with
burning outlines of patterns into the wood surfaces, adding texture. The wood boxes are then
hand-painted with colored wood
stains or opaque colored paints. Some traditional designs use extensive wood-burning to create a dark textured background, which
allow the stained and painted patterns to really stand out. Brass inlay is
also used on some traditional designs, a labor-intensive technique that adds extra sparkle and value.
Our Polish wood boxes have unfinished wood
interiors, preserving the wood's bright natural color, unless otherwise noted.
